Sharing Ecosystem
Established a modular sharing framework and universal codebase, creating a scalable foundation for future sharing experiences.
As Nextdoor shifted its focus toward growth, sharing emerged as one of the highest-leverage opportunities. An audit of the product revealed more than a dozen independently built sharing experiences, each with different layouts, navigation patterns, and capabilities. The inconsistencies created unnecessary user friction while requiring teams to repeatedly solve the same design and engineering problems.
Rather than redesigning another share sheet, the opportunity was to establish a scalable foundation that could deliver a consistent experience across the entire platform while enabling future improvements to be built once and adopted everywhere.
As the lead product designer, I partnered with Product and Engineering to define a unified sharing strategy across Nextdoor. I audited existing experiences, established guiding principles, designed a modular framework, and partnered with engineering to create a universal foundation that could scale across every product surface.
Defined a modular sharing framework and universal codebase that unified more than a dozen fragmented experiences across Nextdoor.
Phase 1 was added directly to the roadmap to establish the shared foundation and measure improvements to sharing engagement. Phase 2 introduced richer content previews that further strengthened the brand experience and expanded the roadmap for future sharing capabilities.
Design for the platform, not individual features
Rather than optimizing a single sharing flow, I audited every sharing experience across Nextdoor to identify common patterns and opportunities for consolidation. This shifted the project from a feature redesign to a platform initiative.
Build a modular framework instead of a one-size-fits-all solution
Different surfaces had different sharing needs, but they shared the same underlying behaviors. We created a modular architecture with reusable components that allowed teams to customize where necessary while maintaining a consistent experience.
Make sharing part of the content experience
Sharing often happens because someone finds content worth recommending. Rather than presenting a generic utility menu, we introduced visual post previews that preserved context, elevated the brand, and made shared content more compelling across messaging and social platforms.
